Children - What happens at your first hearing

The Support Path | Your First Court Hearing: What Really Happens

If your first court hearing is approaching, it’s natural to feel anxious. Understanding what to expect can make the process far less daunting.

At an initial hearing, proceedings are typically short and structured. The court will focus on clarifying the key issues in the case and understanding what each party is seeking. CAFCASS may provide initial safeguarding information, and the judge will often give directions on how the case should move forward.

It’s important to know that final decisions are rarely made at this stage. The purpose of the hearing is guidance and case management, rather than outcomes.

Many parents arrive feeling overwhelmed, only to leave realising the experience was far less intimidating than they feared.

You do not have to face this alone.
The Support Path can attend court with you, provide calm, practical support, and help you remain focused and confident throughout the process.
